Young motorists 'not ready to drive'

Young motorists \'not ready to drive\'
Young motorists are not ready to start driving after they pass their tests, it has been revealed.

Research carried out by financial services provider Swinton found that new drivers have an average of just 30 hours of professional lessons, although the Driving Standards Agency recommends at least 45 hours, plus an additional 22 hours of private practice.

Young drivers themselves believe that they are often not qualified to take to the road, according to the study.

The online survey also showed that 25 per cent of drivers had no practice lessons with their parents and 31 per cent had less than eight hours with family members before sitting their test.

Steve Chelton, insurance development manager at Swinton, said: "Young drivers are particularly at risk of accidents on UK roads so it is vital that parents take some responsibility in teaching their children how to drive to help build their confidence and avoid any unnecessary car insurance claims."

This week, research by the Institute of Advanced Motorists found that drivers over the age of 70 are no more likely to have a road accident that younger people.ADNFCR-2088-ID-19562642-ADNFCR
