UK drivers 'among the safest in Europe'
British drivers are generally more law abiding and safety conscious than their western European counterparts, it has been reported.
According to new research from AXA, only Irish drivers are more conscientious than those in the UK.
Eleven different driving behaviours were considered, some governed by legal requirements and others by road etiquette and common sense.
Spanish and Swiss drivers came third and fourth respectively in the table of ten countries, with those from Portugal and Luxembourg pulling up the rear.
British drivers performed above the average in all but two categories taking breaks after long periods behind the wheel and 'undertaking' on the motorway.
Chris Voller, head of motor claims at AXA, said the findings reveal British drivers to be "generally pretty safe" behind the wheel.
He added: "We appreciate that deterrents across Europe do vary and this may have a positive bearing on some of the behaviours - in particular Great Britain has a large number of speed cameras.
"But it is good to see Brits score so well not just on legal requirements but on behaviours that are simply a matter of safe driving such as tailgating."
According to Caravan Wise, driving safely can help motorists gain access to the most economical motorhome insurance offers.
