UK Cards Association runs credit safety campaign
It claims that more than 32 million consumers now shop online, meaning it is ever important for everyone to play their part in the fight against fraud.
According to the association, the message appears to be getting through, with over 53 million credit and debit cards now registered with MasterCard SecureCode and Verified by Visa.
This represents an increase of 112 per cent on the 25 million cards registered at the same time in 2008.
Katy Worobec, head of fraud control for The UK Cards Association, claimed that more people than ever before will be doing their Christmas shopping online this year.
"There is absolutely no reason why we shouldn't be doing so in complete confidence," she added.
"We have recently seen the first ever fall in card fraud over the internet and, hopefully, this latest campaign will help even more of us stay free from fraud."
Last week, David Rodgers, managing director of Debt Advice Foundation, claimed that consumers must seek to pay off some of their debts rather than simply jumping between the best credit card deals.
