Tories slam doorstep loans
Web and doorstep loan firms are offering very high APRs relative to the base rate, a fact highlighted by a new report from the Conservative party.The Tories found that one provider was offering a short-term loan with a rate of almost 10,000 per cent.
Housing spokesman Grant Shapps said that the situation was "obscene", adding: "A constituent showed me a leaflet offering doorstep loans at 184 percent APR... It wasn't long before I had uncovered payday loans of up to a staggering 10,000 percent APR."
The high rates come despite the Bank of England slashing its own lending rate over recent months - theoretically making it easier for loan firms to extend credit cheaply.
However, the web and doorstop firms - who run a market worth around £3 billion a year - commonly offer loans to people who are likely to be rejected by other providers thanks to their credit record.
The loans are generally small - less than £1,000 - and are repaid over a limited number of instalments.
