Top tips to save on your weekly shop

Top tips to save on your weekly shop

It’s one of those frustrating facts of life that you have to do a weekly shop and every week.

However, have you noticed that prices seem to have become more expensive recently?

The cost of living is increasing and, sadly for many, wages are not moving in the same direction.

For anybody who is looking to save a few pennies on their weekly shop, we have looked at a few tips;

1. Buy own brand products

Buying ‘own brand products’ is often significantly cheaper than buying household names, so one sure-fire way to reduce your shop is by opting for the supermarket’s own products.

If you simply have to get hold of some of the branded stuff, head to cheap stores such as Poundland or Lidl where you can find branded goods at a fraction of the price.

2. Make a list

This is a simple but effective idea. Making a list before you go shopping could save you shed loads in the long run. It means you don’t end up doubling up and buying goods you already have at home.

This could also prevent you from buying things you probably don’t need and ‘spur of the moment’ purchases.

3. Vouchers & loyalty schemes

Sign up for deals, vouchers and point schemes which will allow you to be rewarded for your loyalty and obtain money off. The Tesco Clubcard, for example, allows you to collect points for almost everything in store.

150 points earns you £1.50 and the more points you collect the more vouchers you are likely to get back.

4. Don’t shop on an empty stomach

One of the golden rules of food shopping is not to do it when you’re hungry. If your stomach is rumbling, you are probably more concerned with buying something to instantly ease the hunger pangs rather than saving cash. Keep snacks in your bag to fend off any hunger issues.
