Reckless or dangerous driving is not caused by the age of drivers, but the novelty of having a new car and trying to impress peers, it has been claimed.
According to Andrew Howard, head of road safety at the AA, bad driving is not always due to a lack of training but the attitude of the drivers.
He was commenting after statistics published by Co-operative Insurance and Brake indicated that some 30 per cent of young drivers admit to dangerous or illegal driving.
Mr Howard added that there needs to be more focus on warning people about the dangers of using vehicles as a means of "self-expression".
"There is a wonderful quote in one of our pieces of research in the 90s which said that young drivers drive badly not because they don't know how to drive well, but because they choose to drive badly," he added.
Last week, Caravan Wise suggested that motorhome drivers tend to be older and take fewer risks while driving.
