Older drivers 'not a car insurance risk'
Older drivers are no more likely to have a road accident resulting in a car insurance claim than any other motorist, it has been revealed.
Research published today by the Institute of Advanced Motorists IAM shows that drivers over the age of 70 are safer than younger drivers and are less likely to crash in certain situations because of their restrained driving style.
Neil Greig, IAM director of policy and research, said the findings are in opposition to the common assumption that older drivers are a danger.
Greg Lewis of charities Age Concern and Help the Aged added: "We believe that where drivers wish to continue behind the wheel beyond the age of 70, only convincing reasons should prevent them from doing so."
He went on to say that older drivers themselves are in more danger when on the road because of their physical frailty.
Last month, the IAM highlighted effective enforcement as the most important aspect of reducing dangerous driving.
