Abbey has announced that through January 31st 2008, Abbey credit card customers will get a 5% cashback on their first £1,000 of purchases at all major supermarkets.

The offer, which applies to both new and existing customers, comes as the bank brings its card business back in-house - under the stewardship of Santander Cards Ltd - having previously had it managed by MBNA.

Given the average household spend in large supermarkets is £190.23 per month, according to the ONS, the £1,000 limit in effect covers over 5 months' worth of shopping. Or put another way, an extra £50 in your pocket.

Other features of the card include 0% on balance transfers for 12 months, 0% on purchases for 3 months, and an APR of 15.9%.
