Checkout with Google

Additional Services

Search engine, Google, has unveiled its Checkout internet payments system in the UK.

Google Checkout allows online sellers and buyers to register their details and then pay for goods directly from participating retailers.

Available in the US since June of last year, Checkout was touted by some (though not necessarily by Google itself) as a potential PayPal killer. But that payments system - now owned by e-Bay and which also allows person-to-person transactions (unlike Checkout) - still retains a formidable 25% market share, including 15 million+ users in the UK.

In response to the PayPal juggernaut Google has sought to attract retailers to sign up to its Checkout service by offering them incentives if they advertise via its site - one being to give free transaction handling via the system for a year.
