Motorists urged to put safety first as cold weather hits UK

Motorists urged to put safety first as cold weather hits UK
Drivers should take extra precautions to ensure their vehicle is prepared for the winter season, to avoid letting an accident and ensuing car insurance claim to ruin Christmas.

Installing winter tyres and stocking up on anti-freeze and de-icer have been recommended by Aviva, with forecasters predicting that winter weather is well and truly on its way.

The insurer believes the advice could be crucial, with senior motor underwriter Nigel Bartram pointing out that some consumers will not be aware that seasonal tyres exist, let alone that they will benefit from them.

He explained: "Winter tyres would not prevent all accidents, but their better grip would increase the chances of the driver having a safer journey in difficult conditions.

"We believe winter tyres should be considered seriously as they're not just for snow and ice but for temperatures below seven degrees Celsius."

In addition to winter tyres, drivers have also been urged to ensure their windscreens are properly cleared of ice before setting off on journeys.

Car manufacturer Ford points out that motorists can face stiff penalties and risk accidents if they 'porthole' their view through the windscreen rather than clearing a full view of the road.ADNFCR-2088-ID-801223794-ADNFCR
