More than two-thirds of British drivers support plans to introduce a new offence of 'keeping a vehicle without insurance', it has been claimed.
Paul Watters, head of AA Public Affairs, told the Association of British Insurers' motor conference in London that 69 per cent of survey respondents agreed with the government's Continuous Insurance proposals, with 43 per cent agreeing strongly.
He explained that the new offence would mean there is "no hiding place" for uninsured motorists, reports Easier.com.
"Every vehicle must be either insured or subject to a SORN Statutory Off Road Notification whether or not the vehicle is kept on the public highway," Mr Watters said.
"With police automatic number plate recognition equipment drawing on both the DVLA database and Motor Insurance Database, officers will be able to check whether any UK-registered vehicle is legal."
