Motorhome insurance: 'More help needed' for young drivers
Insurance companies need to do more to look after their young drivers, it has been claimed.
Nigel Lacy, from cover specialist Young Marmalade, said that too many claims are being made by people who have recently passed their test, but the answer to this is not to push premiums ever-higher.
Instead of trying to work with young car, van and motorhome insurance customers, many lenders simply move out of the market, he said.
Mr Lacy added: "Many [young drivers] drive around without car insurance and that is what we are trying to stop.
"We take a slightly different approach - we look at the safety angle. We make the drivers safer by providing them with a safer car or [restrict] the times that they can drive, bringing down the premiums."
According to Caravan Wise, the fact that motorhomes are generally used for leisure purposes helps to keep premiums low.
This is because drivers are rarely in a great hurry to arrive at their destination, the site said, and are therefore less likely to make mistakes on the road.
