Market Indices
Markets were buoyed early last week with the announcement that BHP Billiton was to launch an aggressive bid for Potash Corp on Tuesday. Other big merger news later in the week was the announcement that Intel would acquire McAfee in a friendly takeover. Indices had slipped by market close on Friday as the U.S manufacturing survey on Thursday indicated production headwinds, suggesting a bearish outlook for manufacturers.
UK Consumer Price Index survey reported inflation remaining sticky at 3.1% year-on-year. .
The UK’s FTSE All Share opened the week at 2723.56, closing down -1.56% at 2681.12.
In the U.S, the Dow opened the week at 10303.07, closing down -0.87% at 10213.62.
The Nikkei opened the week at 9145.22, closing up 0.44% at 9186.37.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng opened the week at 20881.95, closing up 0.47% at 20981.82.
