Manic Monday sees online Christmas shoppers spend £17.7 million an hour

Manic Monday Online Shopping
Early bird shoppers looking to avoid last year’s delivery delays spent £13 billion online on Monday.

Dubbed ‘manic Monday’ 21st November was set to be the busiest online shopping day of the year.

According to the latest research by an online shopping comparison website, Kelkoo, savvy shoppers are expected to spend £424 million on the one day.  That’s the equivalent to £17.7 million an hour and almost £300,000 a minute!

More than one third of Brits will do their online shopping whilst at work - that’s nearly 11 million of the UK’s workforce.

Overall, UK shoppers will spend one fifth of their Christmas budget online and each household is expected to spend an average of £682 this year.

£437 is expected to go on gifts, while food and drink will take up £184 of the budget. An additional £41 will be spent on travel and £20 on decorations.

Whilst the first Monday of December is typically the most popular day for online shopping, many are beating the rush, avoiding the crowds and any potential bad weather spells by going online early.

If you’re shopping online for Christmas gifts, here are some top tips to bagging a bargain:

1. Shop around

Much like the shops, don’t head to the first one you see. By having a good hunt around you could find some real gems.  As online competition intensifies, prices of the most popular gifts have fallen by an average of 12% this year.

The research found that 90% of products have decreased by up to 30% in price and just 10% have increased by as much as 6%.

Anyone hoping to get a tablet, notebook or smartphone will be pleased to hear that electronic goods have fallen by an average of 13% on last year’s prices.   The Asus EEE PC Netbook 1018P,for example, is £105 cheaper than last year.

If you’re hoping to do some Christmas shopping online this year, pick your time wisely.

Further research by Time found Monday is the best day to buy electronics, Tuesday is the best day to buy airline tickets and Wednesdays are a good time to buy Jewellery. Thursday evening is a good time for online clothes shopping because this is when shops stock their shelves for weekend promotions and Saturdays are a good time to buy books.

Now you’re armed with online shopping tips, all you have to do is figure out, what to buy!
