How to cut down on your Christmas spending

How to cut down on your Christmas spending
Christmas is an expensive time of year for most people. Although many families look forward to the opportunity to spend time together, tuck into some delicious treats and spoil one another with gifts, this occasion can often cause households to struggle with their finances.

Therefore, it is wise to look for ways to ease the strain the festive period can have on your savings. One of these is to sign up to pre-paid cards, as this will help you keep complete control of your Christmas budget.

These cards work by putting a set amount of money in the account. If you designate the use of pre-paid cards only to Christmas spending, you will have an incentive to force yourself to remain within a certain limit, which is likely to reduce the total you spend.

Furthermore, you might want to put money on to the cards in the lead-up to the Yuletide season so that you are able to spread the costs over a few months. By doing this, you will be able to accumulate enough money in the account so that you can pay for your Christmas Day dinner, festive decorations and presents to give to your loved-ones, without being tempted to take money out of other bank accounts.

If you aim to only use what is on your pre-paid card, you are also likely to be more conscious of trying to reduce the amount of money you spend in order to be able to stay within your budget.

Therefore, by becoming more aware of bargain finds and looking for cheaper alternatives for presents, you will be able to stop expenses spiralling out of control.

Alternatively, you might want to consider putting your Christmas purchases on a credit card. This will help you to spread the cost of everything you buy over time.

Instead of the money coming straight out of your account, you could choose to pay for a portion of the season's expenses in December, and the rest over the coming months. Doing this will mean that your wage packet won't be hit in one go with all the costs incurred during the festive period.

If you are keen on paying for Christmas on your credit card, it is worthwhile looking up deals on different products in the lead-up to the holidays. By taking out a card that offers a low or zero per cent interest rate, this will help you settle the outstanding sum, without having to also pay back additional charges.

This is likely to be particularly important if the cost of the festive season will already have a significant impact to your future wage slips, as you are sure to not want to start your new year in a lot of debt.

You could also look for credit cards that provide cashback services, so that you are able to take out money from cash machines that can be put towards your festive costs; this too will go on your credit card bill for you to pay off when you can.

The best way to make sure you don't overspend at Christmas is, of course, to look for ways to pay less for the things you would like. By keeping an eye out for shop sales and offers of the week, you could still be in a position to buy all the products that you want - at a price you are happy to spend.

Don't forget to pay attention to online deals as well, as buying your gifts on the internet could help you to keep your costs down. Additionally, why not look for discount vouchers? These will help you to save money on what you wish to buy, while still being able to have a Christmas you'll remember.

Making an effort to search for ways to reduce the amount of money you spend over Christmas could mean you are able to have the holiday you want. Furthermore, you could continue to be financially-savvy and bag some bargains when the new year arrives for the following festive period, so that you won't have to face as many expenses next Christmas.
