Forward planning 'crucial for motorists during winter'
The Co-operative Insurance has urged motorists to plan ahead for harsh weather conditions during the winter months.
According to the cover provider, almost 19 per cent of home and motor claims are made in the first two months of the year - suggesting that the worst weather of the year is typically witnessed in January and February.
Accordingly, drivers have been advised to check their anti-freeze levels, tyres, lights and wipers, carry de-icer and an ice scraper, top-up their windscreen washer fluid and use a mixture containing de-icer, while also preparing an emergency kit for their vehicles.
This should include such items as a torch, blanket, first aid kit and water bottle, the firm claimed.
James Hillon, functional leader of The Co-operative Insurance, said the recent bad weather had already had "a massive impact" across the country, with people becoming stranded in their cars because they were not prepared for the heavy snow.
He stated: "Our simple advice isn't rocket-science - it's more about common sense and forward-planning. Of course, accidents will always happen, so we're simply encouraging people to take the time to think about what might go wrong and what they could do to prevent it."
Last week, the AA reported a surge of car insurance claims as snow and ice blighted the UK's roads.
