EC approves banking support measures
The European Commission EC has announced that it has approved new support measures put forward for the UK banking industry.Fees to be paid on guaranteed liabilities are the primary focus of the new measures, alongside the wider breadth of currencies to which guaranteed instruments can be applied.
These new regulations are designed to support the provision of credit and also bring the UK in line with fellow member states.
Neelie Kroes, EC competition commissioner, said: "The excellent cooperation with the UK authorities and streamlined procedures have once again led to a quick and effective Commission decision."
"On this basis we have approved the amendment of the UK scheme in a period of fast-evolving financial markets in order to support banks to provide sufficient credit to the UK economy," he added.
In regards to the UK recapitalisation plan, the EC stated that "fundamentally sound banks" can provide a report on their long-term stability and repayment of capital, instead of a full restructuring plan.
