Driving abroad for the summer?  Check your car insurance before you travel

As we enter the summer holiday period many of us will be setting off for a week or two of rest and relaxation.  A growing number of brits will be driving over to the continent, however, when packing the sun tan lotion, and converting pounds to euros, very few will turn their thoughts to their car insurance and how this will cover then for driving outside of the UK.

If you are driving over the channel this summer, then don’t automatically assume that your car insurance policy covers you for outside of the UK as some of the low cost “budget” car insurance policies will omit this benefit in order to give you a cheaper car insurance quote.

Additionally, if your policy does include European cover, then take into consideration that it, may only provide you with the minimum requirement for driving in that country which is generally third party only cover.

Both Endsleigh and Churchill car insurance include cover abroad for up to 90 days in their policies as standard, however this is only the minimum legal requirement, although for an additional premium based on the certain criteria such as the length of your trip and which country you’re going to you the cover can be upgraded to mirror your UK policy.

It’s vital to research before setting off, the driving law of the country you are going to be driving in and any equipment you may need to carry such as a warning triangle or a first aid kit.

Also worthy of investment if you’re driving overseas, is a good motor breakdown policy. Many breakdown policies will again charge an extra premium for European breakdown cover but this peace of mind is worth the few extra pounds to guarantee your holiday isn’t going to be marred by a flat battery or burst tyre.
