Drivers 'taking safety risks by ignoring breakdown cover'
A new study has highlighted the risks some motorists may be taking with their vehicles and personal safety.
Research conducted by esure indicates that more than half of all drivers without breakdown cover would call a relative or friend to rescue them if stranded on a motorway hard shoulder.
Perhaps even more dangerously, around one in ten would attempt to fix their own vehicle by the side of the carriageway, despite other motorists rushing by at 70mph.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure car insurance, said breakdown cover is "a very small price to pay" for a service that can protect a motorist and their family when they are at their most vulnerable.
He added: "Anyone who calls friends and relatives to rescue them on a motorway is potentially putting three or four people's lives into terrible danger. The motorway is not the place for DIY. Call the experts."
Another cover product that may be essential for drivers is motorhome insurance, which Caravan Wise says may be available with low premiums to responsible drivers.
