Drink-drivers 'continuing to pose risks on the roads'
Police arrested 7,638 people for drink driving in just one month over the Christmas period, it has been revealed.
According to the Association of Chief Police Officers ACPO, a total of 223,423 motorists were breath-tested over the festive break, more than ever before.
The number of drink-driving arrests between December 1st 2009 and January 1st 2010 fell by 16.51 per cent on previous year, the report indicated.
Chief Constable Mick Giannasi, ACPO lead for roads policing, commented that three per cent of those who were tested were found to be over the limit.
"Despite all the messages that drinking and driving is dangerous and illegal, some people still do not get the point," he commented.
"There were still drivers on our roads posing a threat to themselves and others, and that is totally unacceptable."
Earlier this week, it was reported that entertainer Darren Day faces a
car insurance hike after admitting charges of drink-driving and failing to stop after an accident.
