Debt Advice in Scotland

NULL

Many people wrongly think that debt advice is something that only exists in England and that there is little available for people who live in Scotland or other parts of the UK. However, this is simply not true, there are lots of Government and state funded agencies that exist in Scotland to help provide debt advice to people from all walks of life and all geographical locations in Scotland.

Debt is actually falling in Scotland, in the sense that not so many people are getting into financial difficulties, however, there is still a long, long way to go before Scotland can declare itself to be ‘debt free’. Even in 2007 when the debt levels were found to be falling, the average person in Scotland actually owed £31,000. This estimate was actually pre the ‘credit crunch’ so this level may well be higher now, since many people have been quite badly hit by the credit crunch.

Debt advice agencies in Scotland indicate that the levels of debt became manageable when they were able to assist more people to take control of their finances and to stop ignoring the problem and actually take positive steps to manage their situations. As with debt management agencies anywhere, debt advice in Scotland centres on people being encouraged to face their debt problems ‘head on’ and being able to address the debt problems, through taking a close look at their finances.

People looking for debt advice in Scotland, should contact their local Citizen’s Advice Bureau, a debt advice centre, or local/regional debt agencies to ensure that they can gain good, independent access to debt advice, no matter where in Scotland they live. Even the outlying islands all have expert debt advice available so debt advice in Scotland is not just limited to the cities; even the most rural spots are covered as well!
