Credit card fraud 'common with lost and stolen cards'
Card protection service CPP reports that the average amount fraudulently taken is £623, highlighting the benefits of credit card security.
The report also indicated that card fraud tends to peak around the Christmas period, meaning consumers should be on their guard during December.
Sarah Blaney, card fraud expert at CPP, warned consumers to be vigilant.
"If you are only going to use maybe one or two cards to buy your presents with then that's all you need to take with you," she advised.
"Don't carry your card in your pocket. Make sure it is safely tucked away safely into your purse or your wallet," she added.
Ms Blaney also advised shoppers to check all of their receipts against bank statements, making sure that no money has been stolen.
CIFAS – the UK's Fraud Prevention Service recently reported that 68,000 people became victims of credit card impersonation during the first ten months of 2009.
