Car insurance costs could impact road safety

Car insurance costs could impact road safety
Increasing car insurance costs for young drivers will have a dramatic impact on road safety in the UK, it has been claimed.

A spokeswoman for the Institute of Advanced Motorists IAM, said that the cost of car insurance for young people is reaching levels that are prohibitively expensive, causing many to face the choice of not driving at all or driving uninsured.

"The steadily increasing level of premiums which young drivers are facing is bound to cause an increased temptation to drive uninsured," she said.

She explained that the cost of car insurance for a 17-year-old male is almost twice the price of the average cost of a claim.

This will mean young people will be less likely to be able to afford newer, safer cars – something which will impact road safety – while it may also impair their ability to get jobs in rural areas which demand the use of a car.

Changes to car insurance laws in June also made it an offence to own a vehicle without insurance, even if it is not being driven.ADNFCR-2088-ID-800764649-ADNFCR
