Campaign calls for clarity on savings debate ahead
Politicians should outline their stance on savings prior to the general election, according to one campaign group.
According to Save Our Savers, 45 per cent of UK adults feel the main political parties should make savings policies clear in their manifestos.
Some 20 per cent say they would not vote for a candidate who would not make their view on the personal savings debate clear, while a further 21 per cent said a particular opinion could influence their vote.
Reverend John Strain, spokesperson for Save Our Savers, said responsible savers have suffered "years of neglect and abuse by successive governments".
He commented: "The Hold to Account campaign will run throughout the general election period and Save Our Savers will be directly calling on candidates to sign up to a number of key savings policy pledges.
"The action group will urge its membership - and angry savers nationwide - not to vote for those that fail to pledge their support for savers."
Many consumers have struggled to access the
best savings interest rates over the last two years, with the Bank of England keeping its base rate at historically low levels.
