Business loan scheme 'to help small firms'
Around £20 billion of short-term lending has been secured by the plan, along with a £75 million fund for firms in urgent need of a loan to use.
Businesses with a turnover of £500 million a year or under are allowed to participate, as ministers work to improve the supply of credit in the economy.
The global financial crisis has made it more difficult for firms to get loans by traditional means, with lenders damaged by the crisis prioritising patching up their own balance sheets over extending credit to borrowers.
Launching the scheme, business secretary Lord Mandelson said: "UK companies are the lifeblood of the economy and it is crucial that government acts now to provide real help to support them through the downturn and see them emerge stronger on the other side."
Shadow chancellor George Osborne claimed that the scheme closely resembled one his party had put forward previously, however.
"Let us hope that they will properly implement this Conservative policy rather than a pale imitation, or else they run the risk of repeating the mistakes of their expensive temporary VAT cut and achieving nothing," he commented.
