Brits aspire to have better homes
Brits are incredibly house-proud and spend the money they've had earning the
best savings rates on improvements, according to new research.
The study by esure home insurance claimed that the desire to take on home improvements is driven by envy after seeing properties featured on reality television shows.
It found that people in the UK spend an average of £1,171 and 11 days a year doing up their home, breaking down to almost five hours a week, with £529 spent on decorative soft furnishings and £404 on items that will never be used.
Some 37 per cent of homeowners polled said that watching property programmes made them aspire to live in a better home, while 14 per cent admitted that seeing inside celebrity homes made them want more expensive, luxurious items.
However, the amount people spend on their other half has nosedived due to the financial climate, with the average annual spend dropping from £1,103 to £879.
