5 ways to keep kids occupied over half term

Car games with kids

They’ve only been back to school for just over a month, yet already they are being let loose!

Half term is fast approaching and many parents are planning to take to the roads. However, one in 10 parents admits to being frequently distracted by kids in the car.

Here are 5 ways to keep them occupied both in and out of the car;

If you have a car game or activity that keeps the kids entertained, join the discussion on our related Facebook wall post at www.facebook.com/Moneyextra

1. Have a chat

According to the latest research by the Post Office, talking to children in the car is the most popular way to keep them occupied. The favourite car journey game is, of course, eye spy.

2. Book in advance

If you’re heading somewhere this half term be sure to book in advance. Whether you’re travelling in the UK or going overseas, you can often find much cheaper deals when booking in advance.

Rail fares, for example, could be much cheaper when booked in advance. However, you can also find great last minute deals too.

3. Vouchers

You can often find vouchers for ‘cheap days out’ online. ‘Family days out’ and ‘kids-go-free’ style vouchers also are widely available. Get the most out of
vouchers and use them for trips to restaurants too.

Alternatively, why not try free activities such as going to the park or a nearby beach if the weather holds up?

4. Cooking class

Teach your little one to cook. By cooking together you can help your youngster learn about food and enjoy a meal at the same time. Using a cashback credit card you can earn points and rewards. The Tesco Clubcard offers vouchers which can be redeemed in store.

5. Half term project

Set a fun project of their choice to do over half term such as creating a scrapbook of their favourite hobbies. This way they will be entertained while learning at the same time. They could, for example, create a scrapbook of monster trucks by learning about various cars and vehicles.
