Supermarkets in email probe

Additional Services

The Competition Commission has ordered supermarket groups, Tesco and Asda, to hand over millions of emails and other documentation as it probes the relationships between the food retailers and their suppliers, according to reports.

The food retailing giants are being investigated over accusations they threatened to no longer use certain suppliers if they didn't lower their prices. A spokesman for the Commission said legal notices, known as Section 109s, have been sent to the chains.

Both groups have denied the accusations, claim they've nothing to hide and will help the Commission with its investigation.

The move forms part of a much wider investigation into the practices of the four big supermarket chains - Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons - as it seeks to determine the implications of their dominance of the national market.
