European Health Insurance Card EHIC
From 1st January 2006 the EHIC card replaced the former E111 form, which entitles its holders to receive state medical treatment when travelling in the EU, and Switzerland at either a reduced cost or in some cases free of charge. The card can be applied for from www.ehic.org.uk
The EHIC is free to obtain and by carrying one, entitles the holder to treatment that may become necessary during their trip abroad. However this will not cover anyone who travels for the specific purpose of receiving medical treatment.
By presenting the EHIC, the holder will be granted access to the same state provided health care that any resident of the country in which they are travelling in would be entitled to. However not all countries provide free treatment, and you may be expected to pay a contribution, even with an EHIC. It is possible that you may be able to seek reimbursement of this either in the country your in or back in the UK.
The EHIC is by no means a substitute for travel insurance. For example, the EHIC wont provide cover for belongings, private medical care, or any repatriation to the UK. It is therefore still important to hold a valid travel insurance policy when abroad. Some insurers will however waive the excess for any medical claims if you are carrying a EHIC, so just by carrying the card can save around £50-£100 in excess fees.
