U.S. interest rates

In the USA there are two key interest rates to watch the Fed funds rate and the discount rate.

  • The Fed funds rate is what banks charge each other for overnight loans.
  • The discount rate is the rate at which the central bank the Federal Reserve will lend money to depository institutions - this is effectively the equivalent to base rate in the UK.
