In the USA there are two key interest rates to watch: the Fed funds rate and the discount rate.

The Fed funds rate is what banks charge each other for overnight loans.

The discount rate is the rate at which the central bank, the Federal Reserve , will lend money to depository institutions - this is effectively the equivalent to base rate in the UK.
