Protected Rights are benefits within an Appropriate Personal Pension or a Contracted Out Occupational Pension Scheme which relate to a refund of National Insurance payments.
They have been derived from the minimum equivalent cash payments that would otherwise have been paid into SERPS or, latterly, SP2 if the individual had not contracted out.
