Motoring insurance for travel abroad - minimum level of cover

Additional Services

It's estimated some 2 million UK motorists take their cars abroad each year.

All UK motor policies automatically provide the minimum cover required by law in the European Union countries and certain others. However this does not include theft, fire, damage to your car and may not completely cover your liability to other people. It is important therefore to ensure that your policy provides the same level of cover as you have in the UK.

According to the Motor Insurance Bureau, UK motor policies automatically provide the minimum level of cover for travel to:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Luxembourg
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Sweden

Many insurers also include other countries in their standard coverage. Please contact your insurer direct for a list.See also:
