If you are intending making contributions to a Free Standing Additional Voluntary Contribution Scheme, the Inland Revenue wants to be sure that you are not paying more pension contributions than you are allowed to.
So, if your FSAVC payments exceed a specified limit, (currently £3600 per annum), a "headroom check" is carried out to ensure that total benefits do not exceed the maximum permitted by the Inland Revenue.
