The DAX 30 index is published by the Frankfurt Stock Exchange - it's the main real-time German share index and contains 30 stocks from the leading German stock markets.
Unusually, the DAX is a total return index: in other words, it measures not merely the price appreciation of its constituents but also the return provided by the dividends paid to shareholders.
Most other major indices are based on capital appreciation, with total return shown as an additional calculation.
The closing calculation for the index is set at lunchtime. In addition, the DAX now publishes a calculation based on the late-afternoon close of the IBIS, an electronic trading system.
