Like the other big banks, Barclays pays only a nominal rate of interest on credit balances on its current account.
If you want a few perks with your current account you may want to consider a packaged account for a monthly fee. The Barclays Additions account includes break-down cover and mobile phone insurance for a fee of £11.50 a month.
For the First Additions packaged account there is a fee of £6.50 a month. This Barclays account offers cardholder protection and mobile phone insurance as part of the deal.
Although credit interest and unauthorised overdraft rates are the same as the standard Barclays bank account for all packaged accounts, the authorised overdraft rate is lower.
The Barclays Additions Plus account is the most expensive at £14.50 a month. It includes worldwide travel insurance cover, break-down, and domestic emergency cover.
Barclays also offers accounts for students and graduates, with an interest-free overdraft facility of £2,000 and the incentive of six free cinema tickets for opening one.
